Liverpool boss Arne Slot given green light to pursue £65million transfer for Euro 2024 star

Michael Owen believes Marc Guehi would be a perfect summer signing for Liverpool or Manchester United off the back of his impressive Euro 2024 campaign.

Guehi, 24, was expected to be a squad option for England at this summer's tournament but was thrust into a prominent role after Harry Maguire withdrew from the squad due to injury and was the Three Lions' standout player during their run to the final.

Crystal Palace are braced for interest in the Chelsea academy graduate, who joined the Eagles in 2021 and has two years remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park.

Liverpool are believed to be in the market for a central defender this summer - and Owen reckons Guehi would be a shrewd acquisition for Liverpool or United, who are also looking for a centre-back.

“Marc Guehi is obviously a very good player [but] I can't imagine Crystal Palace will want to lose another player,” he told Prime Casino following England's defeat to Spain.

“He's proven in this tournament that he's very good. Left-sided centre-halves are like gold dust these days, people want them. He's proven he can play at a really high level so I've no doubt he would be capable of playing for a club like Liverpool or Manchester United.”

A report from The Telegraph last month revealed that Palace value Guehi at around £65million. It's outlined that the Eagles deem Guehi to be in the same bracket of value as Jarrad Branthwaite, who has been the subject of bids from Manchester United.

Everton have rejected two offers from United and value Branthwaite - who made England's 33-man provisional squad for the Euros before being cut- at £70m.

New Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has not yet dipped into the transfer market since succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Anfield earlier this summer but the Dutchman is expected to bring in fresh blood before the new Premier League campaign.

The Reds have also been linked with Guehi's England team-mate, Anthony Gordon, in recent weeks after it emerged they were approached by Newcastle over a potential deal last month.

Gordon, 23, is a boyhood Liverpool fan and enjoyed a maiden season at Newcastle last year, where he contributed 11 goals and 10 assists for the Magpies in the Premier League.
